Features

20.1 MP Exmor® HD APS sensor with 8 FPS continuous shooting

Every scene is captured beautifully, from corner to corner, with fine details and rich tonal gradations thanks to Sony's proprietary Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor. Its large size delivers high sensitivity, attractive defocusing effects, and low noise in wide-ranging shooting situations including dimly lit environments. Impressive 20.1-effective-megapixel resolution also brings every detail to life.

Translucent Mirror Technology accelerates AF performance

Sony's proprietary Translucent Mirror Technology simultaneously directs light to the image sensor and AF sensor on a continuous basis to realize full-time live view shooting and accelerated full-time continuous phase-detection autofocusing even during HD movie shooting. It's the cornerstone of Sony interchangeable-lens camera technology.

Full HD 1080/60i/24p or 1080/30p MP4 movies4with Quick AF

Create movies of amazing clarity at Full HD resolution with full-time continuous phase-detection AF, the same swift, accurate focusing used during still photography. Movies can be recorded at 60i for super smooth playback or 24p for a cinematic look. You can also use P/A/S/M modes to expand your moviemaking creativity.

Lock-on AF for even easier focusing of moving subjects

Now it's easier than ever to keep moving subjects in focus. Through proprietary Sony Translucent Mirror Technology and subject size detection, new Lock-on AF continuously adjusts target frame size based on various subject characteristics and dramatically increases the in-focus rate for better image results. Even if your subject's face cannot be detected, Lock-on AF ensures smooth, stable focusing using the optimal AF point - without having to search.

High Contrast SVGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF

The OLED Tru-Finder is easy to view in almost any lighting and allows comfortable live-view shooting thanks to Translucent Mirror Technology. You can accurately monitor the results of your settings while shooting, because it faithfully displays details as they will appear in your recording. Pressing the Preview button even displays defocusing effects with greater accuracy than OVFs. Employed in Sony's high-end cameras, the OLED design eliminates backlighting to deliver blacker blacks, clearer details and higher contrast in both dark and light environments.

Up to ISO 16000 sensitivity with advanced noise reduction

Even in dim lighting, you can shoot beautiful photos with natural tonal gradations and low noise - without using a flash. Auto ISO provides outstanding results in most lighting situations and you can select settings manually to suit particular occasions. Excellent low-light performance is made possible by cutting-edge features like the same area-specific noise reduction as found on the α99.

Auto Object Framing intelligently fills the frame with your subject

Easily create studio quality portraits using the iAuto internal exposure intelligence found in the SLT-A58. Simply photograph a person or persons and the Auto Portrait Framing feature will save an additional, optimally framed image in portrait or landscape orientation. Combining Face Detection and By Pixel Super Resolution technologies with Rule of Thirds, and Auto Object Framing provides enhances images for beautifully composed and appealingly balanced full resolution portraits.

SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization

Enjoy sharp images with suppressed camera shake blur when using any A-mount lens (including professional Carl Zeiss® and G Lenses), thanks to image stabilization built within the camera that provides compensation equivalent to approx. 2.5-4.5 steps in shutter speed. An anti-dust coating on the surface of the image sensor also helps keep your images blemish-free.

Advanced 15-point AF system with 3 Cross-sensors

The advanced phase-detection autofocusing system delivers smooth, accurate autofocusing at extremely high speeds. Three cross sensors in the 15-point AF system enable more accurate and reliable tracking of moving subjects than vertical and horizontal sensors can provide, even in dim lighting. You can choose any of four AF area modes (Wide, Zone, Spot or Local) depending on your needs.

Large 2.7" Tilt-able, 460K dot LCD screen

Sony's LCD screen brings out every detail of your scene. You can tilt it to clearly shoot from almost any angle, including over your head to shoot over crowds or on the ground for a startling view of pets and flowers. The 2.7-type screen displays images brightly and clearly at 460,800-dot resolution. Moreover, low reflection technology contributes to deeper blacks and higher contrast. Brightness is adjustable.

Auto HDR built into camera

Captures more scene dynamic range than a single exposure can handle-and more range than photo film. Combines the best highlight detail from one shot, the best mid-tones from a second and the best shadow detail from a third for one incredible shot. Captures in a split second. (Recommended for still subjects.).

Picture Effects

Ordinary scenes become extraordinary photos and movies with Picture Effects. Choose from 11 modes and 15 effects that significantly increase visual impact by adjusting camera parameters and applying advanced processing techniques.

Multi-frame NR

Experience incredible low-light shooting without a flash. The camera captures six images in a fraction of a second. Combining the data from all six, it creates a single image with a reduction in noise equivalent to two additional steps of ISO sensitivity. Sensitivity selectable up to ISO 25600. (Recommended for still subjects.).

Hand-held Twilight

Get cleaner and sharper nighttime pictures-beyond the capability of traditional cameras-without using flash or a tripod. The camera captures six images in a fraction of a second. Combining the data with separate algorithms for still and moving parts of the picture reduces blur, minimizes noise and enables extraordinary detail.
